INSIGHTS FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

What Kind of Financial Advisor Should You Work With When Your Business Is Your Family's Wealth?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Look for a wealth manager who plans around the business, not just your investment account: someone who coordinates your CPA and estate attorney, works on protecting the family from business risk, and helps you keep growing without betting everything on one asset. Selling may be part of the plan someday, but it doesn't have to be the starting point.

THE DIFFERENCE

Why a business owner’s plan is different

For most owners, the business is two things at once: the family’s biggest asset and the family’s paycheck. Personal net worth, retirement, the children’s education and the house payment all run through a company you also have to operate every day.

80–90% of business owners have the majority of their net worth concentrated in their company (CNBC, 2022 / Kiplinger).

Concentration.

When most of your net worth sits inside one company, your family's financial life is tied to one industry, one customer base and one set of decisions. A bad year, a lawsuit, a key employee leaving or a health event does not stay inside the business. It reaches the family's plans directly.

Cash flow that is lumpy.

Business income does not arrive like a salary. Strong quarters, slow quarters, distributions that land late or not at all. A plan built around steady monthly contributions does not fit a household whose income depends on how the company performs.

Entity structure.

How the company is organized, how assets are titled and who owns what decides how much personal risk the owner is carrying. Those choices are usually made once, early, and rarely revisited as the business grows.

Advice that is fragmented.

The CPA files the return. The attorney drafts the documents. The advisor manages a portfolio that may have nothing to do with either. Each is capable in their own lane, but nobody is holding the whole picture, and the gaps between them are where plans quietly break.

THE CRITERIA

What to look for

  • Works mainly with business owners and entrepreneurs.
  • Coordinates with your CPA and estate attorney.
  • Plans for asset protection and entity structure, with your attorney.
  • Builds tax-aware planning across the business and the personal side, with your CPA.
  • Builds personal wealth outside the business, so the family is not dependent on one asset.
  • Plans for continuity if something happens to you (key-person, buy-sell, estate), and for a future sale only if and when you want one.

Questions to ask any advisor

Any advisor can call their work comprehensive. These five questions tell you whether they actually plan around a business.

  1. 01How many of your clients own a business?
  2. 02How do you work with my CPA and attorney?
  3. 03How do you think about the risk of having most of my net worth in one company?
  4. 04What happens to my family and my business if I'm out for a year?
  5. 05How are you paid, and are you a fiduciary for the advice you give me?
OUR APPROACH

How Pro Capital approaches it

Everything we do runs through the VAULT Method: Vision & Values, Asset Protection, Unshakeable Systems, Lifetimes & Legacies, and Taxes & Time, worked as one coordinated plan rather than five separate projects.

We build that plan for entrepreneurs, business owners and families with $1M+ in investable assets, from our office in Southlake, Texas, serving Dallas–Fort Worth and clients in states where we’re registered or exempt from registration.

The work starts with the family and the business together: protecting what you’ve built, building personal wealth outside the company, and coordinating your CPA and attorney so decisions land in the right order. If a sale makes sense someday, we plan for it then, on your timeline.
